HARLEM CUP CHAMPIONS

3/17/2009 - Members from Engine 53 and Ladder 43 were victorious in the  Harlem Cup Hockey Tournament at the Ice Hutch in New Rochelle. El Barrio's Bravest went 3-0 beating 69/28, 59/30 and 80/23. Congratulations to the team!


ANOTHER GREAT TURNOUT FOR ST. PADDY' S DAY

3/17/2009 - The members of El Barrios Bravest hosted our annual St. Paddy's Day breakfast, welcoming our brothers from the East Coast to the West Coast and beyond. We'd especially like to thank the members from California's Orange County Fire Authority for the beautiful plaque they presented to our house.


    

NEW RIG PLACED IN SERVICE

3/5/2009 - Recently Engine 53 took delivery of a new 2008 Seagrave Marauder II  Pumper. This rig will replace 53's 1997 Seagrave which served the Company faithfully for over 10 years. Thanks to Michael Martinelli of www.fdnytrucks.com for the photo's. 


GRAB FOR L-43 AND A SAVE FOR E-53

3/3/2009 - Early Tuesday morning E53 and L43 were alerted for a reported fire at 333 East 108 Street. As 43 Truck (1st due) searched the fire apartment they found an unconscious woman in the rear bedroom. Lt. Gregory Prial and FF John Haseney removed the victim to the public hallway while E91 began to extinguish the fire. While in the hallway  members of  E53 were able to resituate her. This fire was the fist for FF Haseney after returning from a year long combat tour in Afghanistan. Congratulations to all the Brothers who did a great job!

53 / 43 RUN 3RD ALARM IN HARLEM

2/7/2009 - Shortly after 0800 hours Engine 53 was alerted to respond to Box 1442, a phone alarm reporting fire on the 17th floor of 1900 Lexington Avenue. Engine 53 responded as 4th due Engine due to numerous calls. Shortly thereafter the first due companies (E35 & L14) transmitted a 10-77 (High Rise Fire) which brought 43 Truck to the Box. The heavy fire conditions on the 17th floor extended to the 18 floor requiring a 3rd Alarm assignment. Box 1442 assign was as follows:

UPDATE: KIERAN FRAWLEY L-43

1/05/2009 - Firefighter Kieran Frawley's condition has greatly improved to the point where he is expected to be released from the hospital in the next few days. Kieran and his new "crash" helmet will be spending some time with his family upstate. El Barrio's Bravest would like to wish Kieran a speedy recovery and a  BIG THANKS to everyone who helped out!

12/19/2008 - Early this morning Firefighter Kieran Frawley from Ladder Company 43 was involved in a non line of duty accident. He is currently at Cornell Medical Center. Please keep Kieran and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

11/23/2008 - It is with deep regret that the New York City Fire Department announced the death of  Lieutenant Robert J. Ryan Jr. of Staten Island. Lt. Ryan, assigned to Engine 155, died Nov. 23 at Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island, where he was taken early this morning after he sustained injuries while operating at a 2nd Alarm fire at 39 Van Buren St., in the New Brighton neighborhood of Staten Island. Lt. Ryan leaves behind his wife and 4 children. Our thoughts and prayers are with them all.

Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta Announces Death of Probationary Firefighter Jamel M. Sears

11/11/2008 - It is with deep regret that the New York City Fire Department announces the death of Probationary Firefighter Jamel M. Sears. PFF Sears collapsed during a training exercise on 11/10/08 at the Department's training academy. He is survived by his wife, Sherita, a New York City Police Officer assigned to the 41st Precinct in the Bronx, and their two children, son Mahlek, 12, and daughter Jya, 8. El Barrio's Bravest wish to extend our deepest condolences.

MATT LONG RUNS NYC MARATHON

9/25/2008 - El Barrio's Bravest own Matt Long finished the NYC Marathon today in 7 hours 21 minutes. You may remember that Matt was critically injured in 2005 and was not expected to walk again. He along with other FDNY members finished the marathon with a combined time that was over an hour better than the NYPD team, earning the FDNY the 2008 Mayors Cup Award.


KATRINA TOY DRIVE BEGINS

9/25/2008 - The El Barrios Bravest Alumni member Tom O'Connor and his crew have kicked off  the 2008 Toys for Katrina Children Drive. This year will be their biggest challenge in comparison to their past five trips. With the increase in fuel cost along with the volatile economy and unstable news from Wall Street they will have to over come many obstacles to meet their goals. They've set the bar high and are attempting to fill 8 trucks with new unwrapped toys, new books, and supplies to have a successful toy distribution at four different locations. NEW MEMBERS COMPLETE PROBATION

8/28/2008 - Congratulations to Josh (JY) Young E-53, Jake (Spanky) Gardner L-43, and Mike (Gary) Senise E-53 on the successful completion of their probation. As is firehouse tradition they cooked a big meal for the men. Tonight's meal included fresh Maine Lobster and Steak. Great job on the meal boys and welcome to El Barrios Bravest!!

43 TRUCK MEMBER AWARDED MEDAL

6/4/2008 - 43 Truck member FF Steve (Crazy Steve) McAnulty was awarded the Fire Marshals Benevolent Association Medal at the New York City Fire Department's annual Medal Day. Steve was awarded this medal for actions at Box 1277 on December 24, 2007. See the entire 2008 Medal Day Book HERE.

EL BARRIOS BRAVEST RUN TOWER CRANE COLLAPSE

5/30/2008 - Shortly after 0800 the housewatch teleprinter spit out a ticket for Engine 53 and 43 Truck to respond to an EMS trauma box at the intersection of 91st Street and 1st Avenue. As the rigs responded the Manhattan dispatcher notified responding units that they were receiving multiple calls for a possible construction crane collapse. When the members arrived at the location they were met by construction workers stating that there were multiple people trapped. E-53 and L-43 along with E-22 and L-13 immediately began extrication while Battalion 10 transmitted a 10-60 (major emergency response). Members successfully extricated 2 patients, one DOA and another who succumbed to his injuries later at the hospital.

MEMBERS DONATE PLAQUE IN HONOR OF LT MIKE MURPHY

5/7/2008 - Today members traveled to Patchogue on Long Island to attend a ceremony at the Lt. Michael Murphy Memorial Post Office. The US Navy presented the Post Office with Lt. Murphy's Medal of Honor and the members of El Barrios Bravest present a plaque in honor of Murph. Later that day members attended another ceremony at Lake Ronkonkoma where the Secretary of the Navy announced that a US Navy Destroyer the USS Michael Murphy DDG-112 will be built in June of 2009.

LT. MICHAEL MURPHY MEMORIAL FUND

2/12/2008 - A memorial fund has been established to erect a monument that represents what Murph was most proud of and that was being a Navy Seal. Please visit www.murphymemorialfund.com . The monument is to be unveiled on Memorial Day May 26th, 2008 on the corner of Ocean Avenue and Baker Street in Patchogue’s Memorial Park at the conclusion of Patchogue’s Memorial Day Parade. We hope all will attend and help celebrate the life of  Murph and the actions of a hero.


E53 / L43 RUN THIRD ALARM ON UPPER EAST SIDE

2/7/2008 - Shortly after 0500 hours the Box 1033 was sounded for the corner of East 72nd St. and 3rd Avenue for a reported fire in a stationary store. This is normally a Third Alarm Box for E53 and L43 however Ladder 43 was assigned as 1st due truck with Engine 53 2nd due Engine because of an All Hands fire in a high rise on the west side that had been transmitted just prior to this job. 43 Truck arrived 1st due and found heavy fire in the store on the first floor of a 35 story residential hi rise building. This job went to a Third Alarm.

LADDER 43 MEMBER RECEIVES AWARD

1/30/2008 - The New York City Fire Department Board of Merit has awarded FF Scott Coyne of  Ladder 43 a Service Rating "A" for the rescue of a woman at Box 1273 on February 24, 2007. Congratulations Scott!

43 TRUCK HONORED AS DAILY NEWS HERO OF THE MONTH

1/30/2008 - The members of El Barrio's Bravest were honored as Hero of the Month at a luncheon today held by The Daily News. This honor was bestowed upon the members for their actions at Box 1277 on December 24, 2007 where Engine 53 and Ladder 43 worked together to save 5 people from their burning apartment.  IT PAYS TO RIDE TO 1800 FOR ENG 53'S NEW PROBIE SENISE

1/23/2008 - The time was 1758, when the tone alarm crackled and teleprinter spit out the address for Box 1188. Assigning Eng 53 3rd due and Lad 43  2nd due truck for a reported  fire at the address 180 York Ave. As 53 and 43 took up from a small electrical fire on York Ave, they were ordered  by the Manhattan Fire Dispatcher to respond  1st due to a reported fire in the Verizon store on 86 St. As  the companies were responding  the dispatcher  was advising units of numerous calls for a fire on E. 86 St. and 3rd Ave. Battalion 10 arrived and transmitted a 10-75 for a fire in a commercial building. This fire was held to an all hands assignment.


1ST TOUR FOR PROBIE GARDENER IN LADDER 43

1/21/2008 -  As his first tour as a member of Ladder 43 was starting to wind down Probationary Fireman Gardener and the members of Ladder 43 were ordered to fill out a 3rd alarm assignment for box 1358, for a fire in a tenement at the address 269 W 113 St  between Powell Blvd. and Douglass Blvd.  As the company arrived they saw visible fire on floors 2 thru 5 and thru the roof.  PFF Gardener put his Stanford and Yale education to use as he was introduced to the task of opening up ceilings and walls.   This fire went to a fourth alarm with many additional special called .


NICE STOP AT 2012 2ND AVE.

1/19/2008 -  Just before 3am the tone alarm sounded for box 1289 reporting smoke in the area of 1st Ave and E 103 St.  E 53 and L43 responding 1st due quickly found the source of the smoke as they turned onto 2nd Ave.  As a 10-75 was transmitted members realized they had the top floor of an old law tenement on fire. Ladder 43's outside team ( Jerry Dietz, Jim Mcentee, and Mike Donovan) made a quick roof cut and advised the chief they had heavy fire in the cockloft with extension into a 2nd apartment.  Engine 53 did a great job stretching and overcoming a burst length after the line was in operation, giving Ralph Corsini the water he needed at the nozzle to knock the fire in short order.


NICE WORK AS DALE SCOTT HAD ALL HANDS FULL ON HIS 1ST RUN AS A NEW CHAUFFER

1/17/2008 - Capt Hagan assigned Dale Scott as the Chauffer for L43 on his first tour back from chauffer school. All seemed quiet in the Barrio as BC Kelty gave a drill in the kitchen, until 2000 when the tone alarm sounded assigning Engine 53 (2nd due) and Ladder 43 (1st due) to box 1318  reporting the address 2109 1st Ave. at E 108 St. for a fire. As the companies turned out they were informed by the Manhattan Fire Dispatcher of numerous calls reporting fire in a restaurant, 1st floor 2nd floor and 5th floor along with reports of people trapped.
    As the units arrived Engine 91 transmitted a 10-75  and a urgent report that fire had control of the 2nd floor hallway and stairwell in the new law tenement.   Fr. Scott knew he had his hands full with numerous people on all of the front and  fire escapes of this corner building and the outside vent reporting fire out 4 windows in the rear.
    This  fire was knocked with 2 handlines and an additional engine and 2 trucks above the all hands assignment.

Lieutenant John H. Martinson

SIGNAL 5-5-5-5

1/03/2008 - Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta regretfully announced the death of Lieutenant John H. Martinson of Engine Company 249 in Brooklyn.

Lt. Martinson, 40, sustained critical injuries while battling a two-alarm fire at 1700 Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn on January 3.

He was transported to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Lt. Martinson was appointed to the FDNY on May 9, 1993.

He previously served at Engine 204, Engine 80 and Ladder 23. While serving at Engine 80, he received a unit citation in 1996.

He was promoted to lieutenant in December 2002 and assigned to Engine 249 in March 2006.

A resident of Staten Island, Lt. Martinson is survived by his wife, Jessica, and 1-year-old son, John Patrick.

Lt. Martinson is the 1,138th member of the New York City Fire Department to make the Supreme Sacrifice in the Department's 144-year history.
