2/7/2008 - Shortly after 0500 hours the Box 1033 was sounded for the corner of East 72nd St. and 3rd Avenue for a reported fire in a stationary store. This is normally a Third Alarm Box for E53 and L43 however Ladder 43 was assigned as 1st due truck with Engine 53 2nd due Engine because of an All Hands fire in a high rise on the west side that had been transmitted just prior to this job. 43 Truck arrived 1st due and found heavy fire in the store on the first floor of a 35 story residential hi rise building. This job went to a Third Alarm.

IT PAYS TO RIDE TO 1800 FOR ENG 53'S NEW PROBIE SENISE

1/23/2008 - The time was 1758, when the tone alarm crackled and teleprinter spit out the address for Box 1188. Assigning Eng 53 3rd due and Lad 43  2nd due truck for a reported  fire at the address 180 York Ave. As 53 and 43 took up from a small electrical fire on York Ave, they were ordered  by the Manhattan Fire Dispatcher to respond  1st due to a reported fire in the Verizon store on 86 St. As  the companies were responding  the dispatcher  was advising units of numerous calls for a fire on E. 86 St. and 3rd Ave. Battalion 10 arrived and transmitted a 10-75 for a fire in a commercial building. This fire was held to an all hands assignment.

1ST TOUR FOR PROBIE GARDENER IN LADDER 43

1/21/2008 -  As his first tour as a member of Ladder 43 was starting to wind down Probationary Fireman Gardener and the members of Ladder 43 were ordered to fill out a 3rd alarm assignment for box 1358, for a fire in a tenement at the address 269 W 113 St  between Powell Blvd. and Douglass Blvd.  As the company arrived they saw visible fire on floors 2 thru 5 and thru the roof.  PFF Gardener put his Stanford and Yale education to use as he was introduced to the task of opening up ceilings and walls.   This fire went to a fourth alarm with many additional special called .

NICE STOP AT 2012 2ND AVE.

1/19/2008 -  Just before 3am the tone alarm sounded for box 1289 reporting smoke in the area of 1st Ave and E 103 St.  E 53 and L43 responding 1st due quickly found the source of the smoke as they turned onto 2nd Ave.  As a 10-75 was transmitted members realized they had the top floor of an old law tenement on fire. Ladder 43's outside team ( Jerry Dietz, Jim Mcentee, and Mike Donovan) made a quick roof cut and advised the chief they had heavy fire in the cockloft with extension into a 2nd apartment.  Engine 53 did a great job stretching and overcoming a burst length after the line was in operation, giving Ralph Corsini the water he needed at the nozzle to knock the fire in short order.

NICE WORK AS DALE SCOTT HAD ALL HANDS FULL ON HIS 1ST RUN AS A NEW CHAUFFER

1/17/2008 - Capt Hagan assigned Dale Scott as the Chauffer for L43 on his first tour back from chauffer school. All seemed quiet in the Barrio as BC Kelty gave a drill in the kitchen, until 2000 when the tone alarm sounded assigning Engine 53 (2nd due) and Ladder 43 (1st due) to box 1318  reporting the address 2109 1st Ave. at E 108 St. for a fire. As the companies turned out they were informed by the Manhattan Fire Dispatcher of numerous calls reporting fire in a restaurant, 1st floor 2nd floor and 5th floor along with reports of people trapped.
As the units arrived Engine 91 transmitted a 10-75  and a urgent report that fire had control of the 2nd floor hallway and stairwell in the new law tenement.   Fr. Scott knew he had his hands full with numerous people on all of the front and  fire escapes of this corner building and the outside vent reporting fire out 4 windows in the rear.
This  fire was knocked with 2 handlines and an additional engine and 2 trucks above the all hands assignment.

EL BARRIO'S BRAVEST GIVE THE GIFT OF LIFE ON CHRISTMAS EVE

12/24/2007 - As the Christmas holiday approached, the night tour of December 23rd seemed routine for El Barrio's Bravest, closing in on a dozen runs before midnight. The Manhattan Fire Dispatchers turned out Harlem companies just before 3 am.  Engine 53 3rd due and Ladder 43 2nd due to box 1363 E 112 St and Madison Ave for a reported apartment fire.  Engine 58 and Ladder 26 transmitted a 10-75 without delay.  This fire was held to an all hands assignment  with a 10-45 victim removed.
Moments after going back into service at 0421, the tone alarm and teleprinter once again came to life.  Box 1277 was in for the El Barrio's Bravest to respond 1st due to the reported address of 425 E 102 St. reporting fire on the 4th floor and people trapped.   As the companies pulled out of quarters and onto E 102 St the Manhattan Fire Dispatcher, advised units they had numerous addresses and reports of people trapped in apartments 3A and 3C.  Battalion 10 arrived and transmitted all hands on arrival.
When Engine 53 and Ladder 43 arrived at 425 E. 102 St. they were met with fire out the windows on the 3rd floor and multiple people trapped. While E53 began a long stretch due to the complicated layout of the building and hydrant location, L43's Officer, Can, and Irons went to work forcing the apartment door and searching the fire apartment. The inside team found the living room fully involved, were able to crawl past the fire, and located 3 victims in the rear bedrooms. Meanwhile L43's OV and Chauffer were removing one victim out the exterior window via portable ladder and L43 Roof man was setting up for a roof rope rescue of the 5th victim. Just before he went over the side Engine 53 had the fire knocked down. The 5th victim was found to be trapped in the window glass and child safety gates and had to be extricated. Extraordinary job by both Engine 53 and Ladder 43 and the initial minimum required FDNY response of 2 engines and 1 truck. This fire was held to an all hands assignment by division 3 using the following units  Eng  53, 22, 35, 44  Lad 43, 13,   L14 Fast  Lad 22 (salvage)  Rescue 1 Sq 41 Rac 1 Bn 10, 11 Div 3  Field Comm*  Car 4D* Car 12C *
* = units assigned do to the # of fire victims

FIRST ANNUAL ENGINE vs. TRUCK FOOTBALL GAME

12/06/2007 - It was a cold day on the frozen tundra known as Thomas Jefferson Park. It is a place where Engine men become legends and Truck men try and usually fail. The birthplace of legends like John "you can't touch this" Regazzi and Jimmy "Crazy Legs" Leonard. Last Thursday on 113th St. and 1st Ave. in Spanish Harlem, after much controversy we finally had the First Annual Engine 53 vs. Ladder 43 Football Game.

It was a great day, one the Truck will not soon forget. Engine 53 was victorious with a final score of 5 to 3. Fun was had by all. New legends were being born like Mark "I can't win no matter how hard I try" Carpiniello and Dan "no hands" O'Keefe.
