ABOUT EL BARRIOS BRAVEST....

Engine Company 53 was organized on January 14, 1885 and was quartered on 104th St. between 3rd and Lexington Avenues.

Ladder Company 43 was organized on November 27, 1913 and was originally quartered with Engine 91 and Battalion 25 at 240 E. 111 St.

On February 1, 1974 Engine 53 was moved to its new Quarters at 1836 2nd Ave. and was joined on February 2nd by Ladder Company 43. Shortly thereafter the companies became known as "EL BARRIOS BRAVEST" throughout the F.D.N.Y. Better yet, these firefighters were embraced by the community that they serve. EL BARRIO means the neighborhood - particularly Spanish Harlem. We are very much a part of this barrio and the people know it. New York City has many Latino neighborhoods, but ask anyone that lives in those areas where "EL BARRIO" is - they can tell you.

WHERE IS THE BARRIO??

EL BARRIO is located in the borough of Manhattan, North of 96th Street on the East Side. It extends up to about 125th Street, and extends from the East River to about Fifth Avenue.

Other units that cover the BARRIO with us include: Engine Co. 91; Engine Co. 58 & Ladder Co. 26; Engine Co. 35 & Ladder Co. 14; and Engine Co. 22 & Ladder 13.
