POST OFFICE DEDICATION FOR LT MICHAEL P. MURPHY

10/24/2006 - Members of E53 / L43 turned out for the dedication of the Patchogue, NY Post Office to Navy Seal Lt. Michael P. Murphy.

43 TRUCK MAKES WATER RESCUE

10/23/2006 - At 1600 hours Ladder 43 received a call for a woman in the East River at 106th St. and the FDR Drive. When L43 arrived on scene Lt. Steve Hagan located the woman in the water while FF Daniel O'Keefe donned the Cold Water Rescue Suit with the help of FF John Davies. FF Kevin Torrey and FF Michael Donovan placed a 20 foot straight ladder over the railing and secured it. While FF O'Keefe was descending the ladder to the water, PD informed L43 that the victim was an EDP (emotionally disturbed person). FF O'Keefe swam out approximately 150 feet to effect the rescue. He and the victim were safely assisted back to shore with the help of  the members of Ladder 43. Congratulations Dan!!


CHIEF MILTON RUZICKA

10/21/2006 - It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Chief Milton Ruzicka, former Captain of Engine 53. Chief Ruzicka spent almost 30 years of his F.D.N.Y. career in the 25th Battalion as a Fireman, Lieutenant, Captain, and Chief in E53, E91, E55, E58, and Battalion 25. Milty will be missed.


 

    

A GREAT TIME HAD BY ALL AT THE  EL BARRIO'S COMPANY PICNIC

8/22/2006 - The annual E53 / L43 company picnic was held at Salesian High School. Current members, former members, family and friends attended and had a great time as always!!

8/28/2006 -l Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta announce the deaths of  Lieutenant Howard Carpluk, Jr. and Firefighter Michael C. Reilly while operating at Box 33-2797 in the Bronx..Our hearts and prayers are with you all.

FIRST DUE 10-75 ON PARK AVE

7/16/2006 - Shortly before 0800 an ERS Box 1263 was received for the address Park Ave & East 100 St. for a report of fire. As E53 was leaving quarters the dispatcher advised of numerous calls for a  building on fire at the location and the alarm was filled out.

6/7/2006 - Lt. Gregory Prial of L43 was awarded the Vincent J. Kane medal at the FDNY 137th Medal Day ceremony.

MATT LONG RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL

5/23/2006 - After being hit by a bus on his way to work on December 22, 2005 and a lengthy stay at New York Weill Cornel Medical Center, Matt was released from the hospital to continue his recovery. Go, Matt, Go!!

 SECOND ALARM VACANT IN HARLEM

5/1/2006 - Just after midnight while returning to the firehouse from another box, 53 Engine and 43 Truck received a ticket to respond to 110 W. 125 St. and Lenox Ave. on the second alarm for fire in a vacant building.  While the Truck assisted in searches, 53 Engine fed tower ladders and operated for over 3 hours. Thanks to Nate DeMarse for the photos.

GUESTS FROM THE WEST @ EL BARRIO FOR ST. PATRICK'S DAY

3/17/2006 - Over 70 firefighters from Orange County CA, Costa Mesa CA, Connecticut, Maryland, and New York enjoyed a breakfast feast prepared by the men of E53 & L43 before heading out to march in the big NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade!

BLIZZARD OF '06 HITS EL BARRIO

2/12/2006 - With a record breaking 26.9 inches of snow, the men of E53 & L43 were kept busy taking in runs, keeping the firehouse apron clear of snow, and shoveling hydrants.
